Five things to pull about

Reading that a fence stays the same length is one thing. Bending the garden yourself and watching the number refuse to move is another. Nothing here is marked — just pull it around.

Count, don't look

Spin it fifty times

Set how many of the eight parts are black, then spin. The wheel does not care how the parts are arranged — only how many there are.

Spin it and the tally builds up here.
Watch for: with 5 black out of 8, roughly 5 spins in every 8 land black. Try 4 black — it goes stubbornly even, however you spin it. That is what "equal chance" means.

Slide the snail

Drag the snail along the ruler. Two numbers keep changing. One number refuses to.

Watch for: head − tail never changes while you drag. That is why you work out the length first — then the new head is just new tail + length.

Same jug. Same water. Change the number written at the top and the answer changes completely.

Watch for: the water never moves when you change the top mark — but the answer does. The lines mean nothing until you know what one space is worth.

Build the rectangle

Three pieces, one dotted outline. The slanted edges only fit one way round.

Watch for: every slanted edge has exactly one partner that leans the opposite way. Find the pairs and the corners come out square on their own.

Push the step in and out. Six side lengths change as you do it. Watch the fence.

Step across Step up
Watch for: the fence total will not move, whatever you do to the step. Every metre you push in on one side comes straight back on the other. That is why a missing side is never really missing.
